5 Myths about Acupuncture

Written By Allen County Chiropractic Wellness Center on September 6, 2019

Woman receiving acupuncture Although traditional Chinese medicine has used acupuncture for centuries, it is new to Western medicine. This leads to questions about the treatment – as well as plenty of misinformation.

Dr. Shannon Nierman, who is a licensed acupuncturist and practicing chiropractor for a decade, offers the most common myths about acupuncture and the facts about the procedure.

1. Acupuncture is Painful

The needles used in acupuncture are as fine as a cat’s whisker. They are inserted into designated locations to release the flow of energy in the body. The procedure is not painful, and it’s unlikely you will even feel the needles penetrate the skin.

2. Acupuncture Only Treats Pain

While acupuncture can effectively reduce pain, that is not its only benefit. Dr. Shannon also uses acupuncture to treat infertility, hypertension, allergies, sinus issues, stress, and fatigue. In addition, acupuncture can be used to promote general wellness.

3. Acupuncture is “All in the Mind”

Acupuncture is often attributed to the placebo effect. However, the effects are more than psychological. This treatment has been shown to increase the release of endorphins in the body, which reduces pain and creates a general feeling of calm throughout the body.

4. There is No Science to Back Up Acupuncture

Many studies have shown the effectiveness of acupuncture. One patient data meta-analysis found acupuncture has a “clinically relevant effect.” Researchers conducting the study concluded that acupuncture is a reasonable treatment option for addressing pain.

5. Once You Start, You Can’t Stop

Some people believe you must stick to a permanent treatment schedule for acupuncture. While some patients with chronic conditions find regular acupuncture sessions keep symptoms in check, the treatment also addresses the source of acute issues to create long-lasting results in just a few sessions.

If you are struggling with a condition that hasn’t responded to other treatments, acupuncture may be your solution. Contact Allen County Chiropractic at 260-432-7339 to schedule your appointment with Dr. Shannon today.
