5 Signs You Have a Bulging Disc

Written By Allen County Chiropractic Wellness Center on November 6, 2019

Woman with bulging discBulging discs are often the result of wear and tear on the spine. The condition often begins without noticeable symptoms until it starts to compress nearby nerves.

Here are five signs of a bulging disc:

1. Localized Pain

If the damaged disc is in the lower back, you might notice pain radiating from the buttocks and thigh. Bulging discs in the cervical spine might cause pain in the shoulder and arm.

2. Numbness and Tingling

You might experience numbness and tingling of the affected arm or leg that feels like pins and needles or numbness as if the limb “fell asleep.”

3. Stiffness and Soreness

Stiffness will likely be worse first thing in the morning or after periods of inactivity. It will generally improve throughout the day or with movement.

4. Muscle Weakness

You might notice you are not quite as steady on your feet or it’s more difficult to grasp items with the hand of the affected arm. Symptoms will depend on where the damaged disc is located.

5. Loss of Mobility

As you lose range of motion in the affected area, you might also find your mobility becomes more limited. This can affect your ability to perform daily tasks and impact your quality of life overall.
